Ishigaki, Yaeyama Islands

This small provincial town is the main transportation hub for the entire Yaeyama Islands group, offering a major airport and a cruise terminal, plus a good range of shops, restaurants and bars. The island is renowned for its beaches and jungle scenery.

One thing’s for sure, you won’t be shrine hopping on Ishigaki. 
The island’s natural beauty is best appreciated from the capes of Uganzaki and Hirkubo on the peak on Mount Nosoko. Ishigaki is a perfect base to go island hopping to Taketomi and Kuroshima.

With its pristine beaches, rugged mountains and wild rivers the island is popular with outdoor types. There is also excellent diving on its many coral reefs. Food lovers will also enjoy their time here – the island is famous for its Ishigaki beef.

Swim with Ishigaki’s famed manta rays, kayak along the rivers, shake off those sea legs on the island’s numerous hiking trails, visit one of the island’s picturesque lighthouses or take a boat ride to nearby Taketomi Island, known for its traditional Okinawan houses.
