Miyakojima, Okinawa

Miyakojima, also known as Miyako Island, is Okinawa’s fourth largest island and known for its lovely beaches and excellent coral reefs. The island’s tropical climate make it a popular year-round destination. The island is densely planted with sugar cane fields.

Blessed with warm waters, a subtropical 25°C temperature from April to November and abundant marine life, the island is a paradise for water sport enthusiasts of all types. Parasailing, snorkeling and scuba diving are all available. Or just relax in a beachside bar.

Things to See and Do

Take a glass-bottomed boat ride to look at the coral reef and shoals of brightly coloured tropical fish, stop at a farm and try mango and banana ice-cream or savour some Miyako beef, a premium beef cut with a subtle flavor.

Shore Excursions

If you can tear yourself away from the beach, head to the Miyakojima City Tropical Plant Garden that boasts 1,600 plant species and 40,000 trees. It’s also possible to play a spot of golf on a variety of courses. 

Travel Reminders

Miyakojima is home to otori, a drinking ritual involving distilled shochu-like rice liquor. Participants sit in a circle, each one making a toast before draining a glass and then moving to the next round.
