What sets Beppu apart from other hot spring resorts is not only its abundance of thermal waters but also its variety of healthy baths. In addition to hot water baths, you can enjoy mud baths, sand baths and steam baths.
Beppu residents have been harnessing the mineral-laden steam to cook their food for centuries, as it’s said to bring out the flavours of the ingredients. Steamed eggs, sweet potatoes and corn cobs are local favourites. You can steam your own meal at the Jigoku Mushi Kobo, staffed by friendly volunteers who’ll help you time each dish correctly.
Explore the “Hells of Beppu”, eight boiling pools of cobalt blue, silvery grey, blood red and milky white – there’s even one that doubles as a breeding ground for crocodiles! Pop into the Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center to see refined works from Edo-period masters as well as modern designs, and try your hand at weaving a basket.
Remember to enter onsens carefully, as your body needs time to adjust to the hot water. For first-timers, it is wise not to spend more than 5 to 10 minutes at a time in a hot spring. When coming out of the bath, move slowly to bring your heart rate down gently.
